Somdev and Treat Win Again

For the third weekend in a row, Somdev Devvarman has won a tennis tournament as a professional.

This time it was the Kennedy Funding Invitational in New York. He took home a bigger paycheck than the previous two tournaments, but did not score any points since this was not an ATP event.

In the final, Somdev defeated the tournaments #2 seed Dudi Sela in straight sets 2 and 4. Just to add some drama, he was actually down 4-1 in the second set before rallying for the win. Devvarman also defeated the tournaments #1 seed Sam Querrey in the semi-finals 6-2, 1-6, 7-5. The 2nd set loss was, I believe, his first set lost as a professional. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Robert Kendrick in straight sets 7-6, 7-5.

All three of those players are ranked in the world top 125 (Querrey is #45, Sela is #78 and Kendrick is #123). Even though he did not score any points from this weekend’s tournament, Somdev received his points for last week’s tournament as of today’s rankings, so he moved up 96 spots #565 in the world. He will obviously continue to climb as he only has 5 events counting toward his point total at the moment.

Somdev remains undefeated as a professional. One source lists his record as 14-0 though I’m unsure why it’s not 15-0 (I guess one of the tournaments was only 4 rounds or he got a bye in one of the tournaments).

Locally, Treat Huey also won an event in Midlothian, Virginia.
