Quick Lacrosse Update

The Virginia Men’s Lacrosse team hosts Villanova at 2:30pm today in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It’s the second of four games today, with Maryland traveling to Notre Dame for the noon game and UMass/Princeton and Siena/Syracuse battling later in the evening (5pm and 7:30pm respectively).
The other four first round games were held yesterday. I was able to watch a good part of the Hopkins/Brown game, which was good since Virginia faces the winner if they get past Villanova today.
Hopkins defeated Brown 12-11 in overtime in the first game yesterday in what turned out to be the only real close game of the day. I had told a friend (whose wife is a Brown grad) that I thought Brown matched up pretty well with Hopkins and could give them a run. For most of the first quarter, my prediction looked pretty stupid, but Brown made a great game of it. They scored with just a few seconds left in the game to send it to overtime on a goal that more resembled a hockey shot. Sadly, Hopkins scored just a minute or so into overtime to take the win.
If Virginia defeats Villanova today, they’ll face Hopkins next Sunday at noon in Annapolis.
North Carolina beat UMBC 15-13 in the 2:30pm game yesterday (though I don’t think it was really that close) and Cornell beat Hofstra 11-8 in the 5pm game (that was close for a while, but once Cornell jumped out to a 10-6 lead, it was over).
After the Hopkins game, I was most interested to see how Duke would handle Navy. I’m pretty much just praying that Duke will lose to someone on that side of the bracket so we can’t face them at any point in the tournament. Navy was definitely not the team that would beat them. Duke jumped out to a large lead (I stopped paying attention at about 6-0, so I’m not sure how big it got before Navy scored) and coasted to a 14-5 victory. So much for that.
Duke and North Carolina meet in Annapolis on Sunday in what will be a repeat of the ACC Championship game. I’ll be there rooting for North Carolina, but the way Duke looks lately…
