Men’s Tennis Advances

I dropped by the Snyder Tennis Center yesterday afternoon to catch a few minutes of NCAA first-round action between the #1-ranked Virginia Cavaliers and Navy. Apparently, it was good that I only allotted a few minutes to be there, because that was seemingly all it took for the Hoos to drop Navy 4-0.

There’s frankly not a whole lot to say about this match because the Midshipmen were simply not in the same league of players as the Cavaliers. I overheard a few Navy players commenting that they didn’t play poorly – they just got beat.

Virginia took the doubles point quickly with wins at #2 and #3, both by a 8-1 margin, with #1 doubles winning at the time 6-2.

The singles matches didn’t really take much longer than the doubles. Sanam Singh won at #2 by blanking his opponent 6-0, 6-0. Michael Shabaz made it 3-0 by winning on the first court 2 and 1. Just a few minutes later, Jarmere Jenkins finished off Navy, winning  1 and 1 at #3 singles.

The other three Cavaliers playing (Drew Courtney at #4, Houston Barrick at #5 and Lee Singer at #6) all won their first sets and were winning in their second sets when the match was called. No Navy player (or doubles team for that matter) tallied more than  3 points during the contest. Domination.

Virginia takes on Wake Forest today at 1pm at the Snyder Tennis Center. Wake Forest blanked Columbia earlier in the day. Virginia beat Wake 6-1 just over a month ago in Charlottesville during the regular season.

I snapped a few pictures of the match while I was there. You can check them out in the photo gallery.
