Sunday, February 15 2009 by Tim - 0 comments

Just a couple of minutes ago, the Virginia Men’s Tennis team, ranked #5 in the country, defeated Tennessee to advance to the finals of the 2009 ITA National Team Indoors. U.Va. is the defending ITA Indoors champion and has put together an impressive run through the tournament thus far. They defeated #12 Tulsa in the first round on Friday, blanking them 4-0. They followed that up with a hard-fought 4-3 win over #4 UCLA. Today they scored another shut out victory, taking down #8 Tennessee 4-0. The Hoos meet #3 Georgia tomorrow at noon to finish the defense of their title. For those that haven’t been...

M Tennis Defeats Arkansas in ITA Indoor Qualifier

Saturday, January 31 2009 by Tim - 0 comments

Facing its third top-50 team of the season, the #5 Virginia Men’s Tennis team scored a perfect victory – also their third of the season. The Cavaliers, who previously blanked #64 William & Mary and #30 Notre Dame along with a 6-1 win over #15 Illinois, defeated #45 Arkansas 7-0 in the first ITA National Indoors Qualifier at the Boar’s Head Sports Club yesterday. In the doubles point, the No. 1 match was a big one, pitting the #3 pair in the country (Virginia’s Sanam Singh and Houston Barrick) against the #15 pair (Blake Strode and Matt Hogan). Singh and Barrick took the win 8-4. Virginia’s...

Somdev’s Streak Ends

Saturday, August 02 2008 by Tim - 0 comments

It had to end sometime. Somdev’s impressive streak of consecutive wins finally came to an end today as he lost to the 6-seed and 124th ranked Go Soeda of Japan in straight sets 6-4, 7-6. Even with the loss, he still picks up 16 points and several thousand dollars in prize money. Currently ranked #345 in the world, the extra points will probably bump him up 20-30 spots.

Somdev in Quarters at VanOpen

Friday, August 01 2008 by Tim - 3 comments

Somdev Devvarman has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Vancouver Open – part of the ATP Challenger Series. This time he had a little help from his opponent. After defeating Cecil Mamiit in a tight first round 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (4), Somdev had the unfortunate draw of playing the #1 seed in the entire tournament. In an interesting twist #1 seed (and ranked #72 in the world) Yen-Hsun Lu retired – apparently without playing – moving the former Cavalier into the quarterfinals automatically. It seems that Lu somehow injured his thigh while preparing for the match. The two-time NCAA singles champion now...

Somdev Updates

Saturday, July 26 2008 by Tiki - 2 comments

Ask , and ye shall receive.  Somdev continued his success at the Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships, defeating Italy’s Andrew Stoppini in straight sets.  Stoppini was ranked 249th internationally. Somdev was behind 5-1 in the first set and stormed back to force a tiebreaker.  Then, falling behind 4-0 in the tiebreaker, he again fought back to take the set.  That seemed to take the wind out of Stoppini’s sails, as Somdev took the second set 6-1.  Next up is the Belgian Xavier Malisse, the 127th ranked player in the world.  By reaching the semi-finals, Somdev has...

Somdev Rolls On

Friday, July 25 2008 by Tim - 3 comments

Former Cavalier Somdev Devvarman has continued his winning ways this week, winning 5 matches in the Lexington Challenger (also known as the confusingly named Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships). Somdev (#566 in the world) won three matches over the weekend to qualify for the main draw. In the first round of the main draw, he defeated Great Britain’s Jamie Baker (#266 in the world) 7-5, 6-2. By defeating Baker, Somdev earned the right to play the tournament’s second seed, Bobby Reynolds of the United States (#92 in the world). Well, that proved to be no problem for the two-time NCAA singles champion...

Somdev and Treat Win Again

Monday, July 14 2008 by Tim - 0 comments

For the third weekend in a row, Somdev Devvarman has won a tennis tournament as a professional. This time it was the Kennedy Funding Invitational in New York. He took home a bigger paycheck than the previous two tournaments, but did not score any points since this was not an ATP event. In the final, Somdev defeated the tournaments #2 seed Dudi Sela in straight sets 2 and 4. Just to add some drama, he was actually down 4-1 in the second set before rallying for the win. Devvarman also defeated the tournaments #1 seed Sam Querrey in the semi-finals 6-2, 1-6, 7-5. The 2nd set loss was, I believe, his...

Somdev Wins Second Futures Tournament

Monday, July 07 2008 by Tim - 0 comments

I guess when its summertime and we don’t have much to talk about in the way of our current student-athletes, we get to talk a bit about some of our former student athletes . In this case, former Cavalier standout Somdev Devvarman won his second consecutive Futures tournament since graduating. Just last weekend Somdev won the Buffalo Bill Futures Tournament in Rochester, NY. Now he’s won the Men’s Futures of Pittsburgh tournament as well. The two-time NCAA singles champion is a perfect 10-0 since graduating. He’s been playing so well that he hasn’t even dropped a single set yet. To add some icing...

Tennis NCAA Tournament Recap

Wednesday, May 21 2008 by Tim - , - 0 comments

I fell behind a little bit on my blogging in the last couple weeks, so I'm going to recap the rest of the NCAA Tournament for the Tennis team in one post. The team continued an [expected] strong weekend by defeating #39 Penn State 4-0 last Sunday. After a few days off to prepare for Tulsa, the Hoos took down #16 Michigan in equally strong fashion, winning 4-0. Including the ACC Championship game against Miami, that made for four consecutive 4-0 wins, all in tournament play. That's impressive. After Michigan, the team had yet another rematch against #10 Baylor. This match proved to be tougher than...

Men Crush Fairleigh Dickinson

Saturday, May 10 2008 by Tim - , - 0 comments

In a match that lasted less than 2 hours, the #1 ranked/seeded U.Va. Men's Tennis team crushed Fairleigh Dickinson in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. At #3 doubles, the team of Singh/Barrick drew blood first, winning quickly 8-2. At #1 doubles, Devvarman/Huey finished just minutes later also winning 8-2 and securing the doubles point for the Cavaliers. Inglot/Shabaz, playing at the #2 doubles spot were winning 7-3 when they stopped play since the doubles point had already been won. In singles, it was: Angelinos at #6 winning 0&2; Singh at #4 with the double goose eggs; and Shabaz...
