Women Demolish Wolfpack
Thursday, October 02 2008 by Tim
Two weeks ago, the Virginia men’s soccer team crushed N.C. State 5-0 to start off their ACC slate of games. This week it was the women’s turn and they definitely did not disappoint. Virginia handed the Wolfpack their second straight loss – both in ACC play – by a hefty 6-0 margin. The Cavaliers scoring was started by freshman Lauren Alwine (Pictured right. Photo courtesy VirginiaSports.com) who had a goal in the 39th minute that gave Virginia a lead they would not relinquish. Alwine would go on to add three assists in an impressive performance for the freshman.
Virginia had won its previous thirteen matches against State, but this time it took a while for the team to get going. They had some problems with their first touches, but once they got going they were hard to stop. The Wolfpack seemed to have no answers for the Cavaliers even when Virginia was struggling to put points on the board.
After the Cavaliers had a close miss on a rebound in the 25th minute, Alwine got in her first goal of the game. A few minutes later, junior Jess Rostedt got her first goal of the game – and season – on a terrific one on one play with the Wolfpack goalie. That would finish out the scoring for the half, with the Cavaliers taking a 15-2 shot advantage and 2-0 corner kick advantage into the locker room.
The second half had a lot of entertaining moments as well as a lot of rather boring ones as the Cavaliers took their two goal advantage and quickly put the game completely out of reach. The last 25 minutes – even though it did include a score – looked more like a game of keep away than anything else. Before that, though, several more Cavaliers would get in on the action.
Last week’s star, sophomore Megan Lenczyk (Pictured right. Photo courtesy VirginiaSports.com), got in a goal on cleanup from a missed shot that bounced out. Caitlin Miskel then got in the action with a one timer on a cross and celebrated with a back flip on her way back across the field. Senior Kelly Quinn got on the board with a shot past the goalie after a free kick from near the sideline. Junior Amanda Stewart closed out the scoring during the keep away time I mentioned early. Virginia got several more scoring attempts during that stretch and Stewart managed to capitalize on one of them.
On the game, Virginia had a 26-4 shot advantage. Goalkeeper Celeste Miles had 1 save while registering her seventh shut out of the season and third in a row (all three being ACC matches). Virginia goes to 9-1-1 on the season and 3-0 in the ACC. The Wolfpack falls to 8-4-0 and 0-2 in the ACC.
The Cavaliers travel to Clemson on Sunday at 2pm to begin a three game road stretch before coming home for the final four games of the season.
I put a few pictures from the game up on the photo gallery. My camera isn’t that great, so don’t expect any Mike Ingalls-like photos. I just thought some people might enjoy the scenery from Klöckner.
