W Soccer Crushes Richmond

If only the results of Women’s Soccer were somehow indicative of the results on the gridiron, we could now guarantee a lot of happy Wahoos tomorrow. But alas, we’ll just have to settle with being very pleased with how the Virginia Women’s Soccer team has started their season.

Tonight, in a game nestled between two men’s soccer matches, the lady Cavaliers demolished the Richmond Spiders 8-0. Meghan Lenczyk (8th minute) and Sinead Farrelly (14th and 16th minutes) put the ‘Hoos up 3-0 in the first 16 minutes and they never looked back.

Virginia would score four more goals on their own (Katie Carr, 39th minute; Lenczyk 48th minute; Lindsey Miller 52nd minute; Amber Fry 79th minute). If you’re wondering why I said “on their own,” it’s because Richmond managed to also score an own goal. The official stats say “clearance deflected off defender and in.” Oops.

The women (4-0-1) have now outscored their opponents 20-1, with the only allowed goal occurring in the 1-1 tie at #11 Penn State. They return to action next Friday when they host Texas in the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic.
