U.Va. Crushes N.C. State 5-0

Freshman Chris Agorsor notched the first goal of the game 15 minutes in and the Cavaliers never looked back en route to destroying the Wolfpack 5-0. Fellow freshmen Tony Tchani and Hunter Jumper would add three more goals in the first half while redshirt freshman Jimmy Simpson hit the back of the net in the second half to close all scoring.
Virginia outshot State 13-6 and had 9 goals on net as Wolfpack GK Christopher Widman had 4 saves. Virginia GK Michael Giallombardo (Pictured right. Photo courtesy VirginiaSports.com) also had 4 goals in the Cavalier’s first shut-out of the season. But Giallombardo wasn’t really challenged that often as the Wahoo midfielders kept the ball in Wolfpack territory for most of the game.
The poor offensive showing that Tiki and I witnessed during the St. John’s game earlier this season was nowhere to be found as the first half looked more like Virginia was running shooting drills on the field.
Chris Agorsor gave the Cavaliers what would be the game winning goal about 15 minutes in on a nice pass from fellow freshman Tony Tchiani.
A little over twenty minutes later, Tony Tchiani (Pictured left. Photo courtesy U.Va. Media Relations) got in on the scoring himself, putting in a penalty kick to give the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead. The goal began a flurry of scoring over the next five minutes as another freshman, Hunter Jumper, scored on a botched clear by the Wolfpack. Tchiani wasn’t done yet, however, and two minutes later he headed in a cross from Matt Mitchell to finish the scoring for the half.
The Cavaliers may not have been off to a great start on the season before this game – they came in 2-3-0 on the season – but they’re off to a solid start in ACC play. Virginia now stands at 1-0 in the ACC while the Wolfpack fall to 0-2.
Up next for the Cavaliers is Central Connecticut State on Tuesday at 7pm.
I’ll have a short photo gallery up from the game sometime this weekend. Just a few shots I took of the game and some “special guests” who were in attendance.
