Mountaineers Hand Virginia Their First Loss

Sunday, September 21 2008 by Tim

A trip to West Virginia to face the #15 Mountaineers didn’t turn out very well as the #9 Virginia Women’s Soccer team fell 3-0 earlier today.

West Virginia scored early – their first goal was in the second minute of play – and then added to the score late – goals in the 72nd and 85th minutes put the Mountaineers ahead by the final 3-0 margin.

The only real bright spot in this game was a 6-3 corner kick advantage. Otherwise, West Virginia controlled the stat line. They held a 7-4 shot advantage, a 3-2 save advantage and had only 5 fouls to Virginia’s 13.

This certainly wasn’t what the lady Cavaliers wanted to do before they head into the rough ACC conference schedule. They begin ACC play on Thursday at #9 Florida State and then head to Miami on Sunday.

From everything I can tell, this game appears to be a fluke as Virginia had only given up 3 goals through the 8 previous games combined. Granted, the competition was different as this was Virginia’s first ranked opponent and the game was on the road. Nonetheless, I expect the Cavaliers to bounce back during the trip to the Sunshine State.
