Men’s Soccer Begins Title Defense With a Win

The 2009 edition of the Virginia men’s soccer team won the National Championship. But this is a new year, with some different faces on the pitch. So far, the results are pretty similar. The 2010 edition began the season tonight at Klockner, defeating UAB 2-1.
After a scoreless first half, UAB got on the board first in the 58th minute with a goal by Babayele Sodade. But it didn’t take long for the Cavaliers to counter. Sophomore Sean Hiller notched the Cavaliers’ first goal of the season in the 61st minute off a penalty kick. In the 74th minute, Sophomore phenom Will Bates gave Virginia a lead it would not relinquish. In fact, the Cavaliers seemed to be even more on the attack after taking the lead.
Overall, the Cavaliers outshot the Blazers 20-5, including a 10-2 margin in shots on goal.
The men return to action on Sunday at 3pm when they take on St. John’s. The Johnnies are ranked #17 in the nation and defeated Virginia Tech 2-0 earlier today at Klockner Stadium. The Hokies and Blazers will meet at noon on Sunday.
