The third seeded Women’s Soccer team defeated Wake Forest last night 3-2 in double overtime on a golden goal by sophomore Sinead Farelly to advance to the semi-finals of the 2008 ACC Championships. Virginia now faces the seven seed Virginia Tech who surprised second seeded Florida State earlier in the day. That game will be at 7:30 tomorrow night.Nikki Krzysik Named ACC Defensive Player of the Year

A release from U.Va. notifies us that we’ve got the ACC Defensive Player of the Year as well as four other All-ACC players: CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia senior defender Nikki Krzysik was named the 2008 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and five Cavaliers earned All-ACC honors as the conference announced its women’s soccer honors on Tuesday. “Our entire program is extremely proud of the players who earned 2008 All-ACC honors, especially Nikki's distinction as the Defensive Player of the Year,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “To have as many players as we had represented on both squads is a tribute...

The winner will take on the winner of the 3rd quarterfinal between #2 Florida State and #7 Virginia Tech. That match would be at 7:30pm on Friday night. Chase Neinken’s clean up goal off a Tony Tchani assist in the 88th minute lifted Virginia over visiting Clemson 1-0 tonight at Klöckner Stadium. It was a physical game, featuring 27 fouls and lots of talking between the players on the pitch – though only one yellow card on each team. The Clemson coach even spent a couple minutes arguing with the referee after the game was over. The Cavaliers led the Tigers in shots (15-2), shots on goal (6-1) and corner kicks (4-3). Virginia midfielder Jonathan Villanueva was involved in several altercations with Clemson players, leading first to a yellow card...
Men’s Soccer Defeats Liberty 3-0

Taking a break from thrashing their way through the ACC, the men’s soccer team hosted in-state Liberty tonight at Klöckner Stadium. As one would hope, they dispatched the Flames easily. Rising star Tony Tchani continued his scoring ways, notching a goal in the 22nd minute. Too bad for Liberty that redshirt freshman Jimmy Simpson (Pictured right. Photo courtesy VirginiaSports.com) had already notched two goals in the previous ten minutes to put the Cavaliers up for good. Virginia out shot the Flames 14 to 3, but curiously lost the corner kick battle 5 to 2. Up next for Virginia (3-0-0 ACC, 6-3-0...
Virginia Defeats #12 UNC 1-0

I didn’t get to see any of this game, so I’ll just point you to the official recap . This is a big win for this young team. Going on the road against a very good team like the Tar Heels and coming out with a win has got to give them a lot of confidence for the rest of the season. Virginia stands alone at the top of the ACC standings right now at 3-0 (6-3 overall), something that would have been hard to believe about two weeks ago when the Cavs were just 2-3 and out of the national picture. Since then, Virginia has won 4 in a row, including three games against ACC opponents. The guys now come home...
Women Demolish Wolfpack
Thursday, October 02 2008 by Tim - 0 comments
Two weeks ago, the Virginia men’s soccer team crushed N.C. State 5-0 to start off their ACC slate of games. This week it was the women’s turn and they definitely did not disappoint. Virginia handed the Wolfpack their second straight loss – both in ACC play – by a hefty 6-0 margin. The Cavaliers scoring was started by freshman Lauren Alwine (Pictured right. Photo courtesy VirginiaSports.com) who had a goal in the 39th minute that gave Virginia a lead they would not relinquish. Alwine would go on to add three assists in an impressive performance for the freshman. Virginia had won its previous thirteen...
Freshmen Continue Growth

Freshman Tony Tchani scored in the fifth minute and again in the 16th minute. As it turned out, Virginia didn’t really even need that second one. Junior Ross LaBauex and Freshman Brian Ownby each added a goal as the Cavaliers continued their recent freshmen-led domination of opponents at Klöckner Stadium with a 4-0 win over Central Connecticut State. In the last two games, Virginia has outscored opponents 9-0. The real shocking part? Eight of those nine goals were scored by either true freshmen or redshirt freshman. Tchani (Pictured right. Photo courtesy VirginiaSports.com) has scored four of the...
Mountaineers Hand Virginia Their First Loss

A trip to West Virginia to face the #15 Mountaineers didn’t turn out very well as the #9 Virginia Women’s Soccer team fell 3-0 earlier today. West Virginia scored early – their first goal was in the second minute of play – and then added to the score late – goals in the 72nd and 85th minutes put the Mountaineers ahead by the final 3-0 margin. The only real bright spot in this game was a 6-3 corner kick advantage. Otherwise, West Virginia controlled the stat line. They held a 7-4 shot advantage, a 3-2 save advantage and had only 5 fouls to Virginia’s 13. This certainly wasn’t what the lady Cavaliers...
U.Va. Crushes N.C. State 5-0

Freshman Chris Agorsor notched the first goal of the game 15 minutes in and the Cavaliers never looked back en route to destroying the Wolfpack 5-0. Fellow freshmen Tony Tchani and Hunter Jumper would add three more goals in the first half while redshirt freshman Jimmy Simpson hit the back of the net in the second half to close all scoring. Virginia outshot State 13-6 and had 9 goals on net as Wolfpack GK Christopher Widman had 4 saves. Virginia GK Michael Giallombardo (Pictured right. Photo courtesy VirginiaSports.com) also had 4 goals in the Cavalier’s first shut-out of the season. But Giallombardo...
