Nearly two months ago, then #12 Wake Forest upset then #2 Virginia, giving the Cavaliers their first loss of the season and ending what some hoped would be a nice run after the national championship in 2009. Fast forward to yesterday, in Cary, N.C. (ironically the site of last year’s College Cup) and Virginia was able to get some redemption. Junior Hunter Jumper scored just three minutes into the second half on an assist by the high motor Ari Dimas to provide the game’s only goal. Virginia not only held on for the win, but actually outshot Wake Forest in the second frame 7-5. Both teams had only...
Men’s Soccer Begins Title Defense With a Win

The 2009 edition of the Virginia men’s soccer team won the National Championship. But this is a new year, with some different faces on the pitch. So far, the results are pretty similar. The 2010 edition began the season tonight at Klockner, defeating UAB 2-1. After a scoreless first half, UAB got on the board first in the 58th minute with a goal by Babayele Sodade. But it didn’t take long for the Cavaliers to counter. Sophomore Sean Hiller notched the Cavaliers’ first goal of the season in the 61st minute off a penalty kick. In the 74th minute, Sophomore phenom Will Bates gave Virginia a lead it...
W Soccer Crushes Richmond

If only the results of Women’s Soccer were somehow indicative of the results on the gridiron, we could now guarantee a lot of happy Wahoos tomorrow. But alas, we’ll just have to settle with being very pleased with how the Virginia Women’s Soccer team has started their season. Tonight, in a game nestled between two men’s soccer matches, the lady Cavaliers demolished the Richmond Spiders 8-0. Meghan Lenczyk (8th minute) and Sinead Farrelly (14th and 16th minutes) put the ‘Hoos up 3-0 in the first 16 minutes and they never looked back. Virginia would score four more goals on their own (Katie Carr...

There’s not a lot to say about this game other than that it was complete and utter domination. So I’ll just quote something from the VirginiaSports.com article that sums it up: The No. 7 Virginia women's soccer team continued its strong start to the 2010 season, cruising to a 6-0 victory over Colgate Sunday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers outshot the Raiders 30-0 in the contest, as they improved to 2-0-0 on the season. Uh. Wow. So that means we’ve outshot our opponents 46-1 in the first two games and outscored them 10-0. I think we’ll all take that! The ladies head off to the Penn...
U.Va. Opens ‘10-‘11 Sports Season with W Soccer Win
Friday, August 20 2010 by Tim - 0 comments
The Virginia Women’s Soccer team took to Klockner Field tonight at 7pm to start their season. But it wasn’t just their season they were kicking off – it was the entire sports season for U.Va. that was beginning. We can only hope that the outcome of the game is a good omen for the outcome of all of our sports. The ladies pummeled visiting Liberty 4-0, with an even two goals per half. Senior Meghan Lenczyk tallied two goals - including the first goal of the young season. Junior Lauren Alwine – who assisted on Lenczyk’s second goal – also tallied a goal, while Freshman Gloria Douglas scored...
Virginia Wins Soccer National Title

The Virginia men’s soccer team started off the season a bit slow. Three exhibition losses had some fans wondering if the youth on the team was just too much for the Cavaliers to overcome this season. They began the season ranked #22 in the nation, but would the young players and new faces, including a transfer in goal, anchoring the team be able to build from that? As the team celebrated it’s victory over Akron in the NCAA National Championship game this afternoon in Cary, NC, the youth of the team was looking more like a promise of future success rather than a potential stumbling block. A Cavalier...
Hoos Take The Title on Penalties

In the late 80s and early 90s, the Virginia Cavaliers were the team to beat in NCAA soccer. From 89 through 94, they won 5 titles and then in 97 they played for another. Since then, the Hoos are struggled a bit, at least by their own lofty expectations. The struggles ended today. In a cold, pouring rain, the Hoos and Akron Zips traded scoring chances and some hard fouls for 110 minutes of scoreless soccer. There were some great defensive plays, a couple of clutch saves by both keepers, and some sloppy play from everybody. The game would go to penalties. Say what you...
Krzysik Named First Team All-American
Wednesday, December 10 2008 by Tim - 0 comments
For the second year in a row, Virginia defender Nikki Krzysik ends this season as an All-American. She becomes only the third player in school history to be named to the All-American first-team. Andrea Rubio (1991, 1992) and Becky Sauerbrunn (2003, 2007) were the other two. Recently, she was named one of the 15 semifinalists for the 2008 Hermann Trophy, given to the top collegiate soccer player in the country. That award will be presented on January 9th. She was also named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and first team All-ACC.W Soccer Advances to Sweet 16 With Win Over WVU

Back in September, then #9 Virginia travelled to Morgantown, W.Va. to take on then #15 West Virginia. The trip didn’t end well for the Cavaliers, as the Mountaineers handed them a 3-0 loss – their first of the season. At noon today Virginia got a chance for redemption on their home field and they did not waste that opportunity, beating West Virginia 3-2 to advance to the NCAA Tournament round of 16. Virginia would jump on the board early, scoring in the 13th minute, and jumped out to a 3-0 lead by halftime. West Virginia would rally in the second half, scoring two goals, but in the end the rally...

The Virginia Women’s Soccer team defeated Army 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Sinead Farrelly scored the winning goal in the 26th minute and Jess Rostedt added an insurance goal in the 58th minute. Virginia outshot Army 22-1 and tallied an 8-0 corner kick lead. Virginia now faces West Virginia on Sunday at 1pm. West Virginia defeated Princeton in the later game today 2-1. They also defeated Virginia earlier in the year 3-0, though that game was held in Morgantown.
