Men’s Lacrosse Pummels Villanova

Four minutes into the first-round NCAA game at Klockner Stadium yesterday, the scoreboard still read 0-0. One of those goose eggs would disappear very quickly, while the other would remain for another 48 minutes. Virginia found itself leading the Villanova Wildcats 9-0 at the end of the first quarter, 15-0 at halftime and 18-0 entering the 4th quarter. While the final score of 18-6 makes the game look infinitely closer than it really was, Villanova just never knew what hit them. And boy did it hit them. Repeatedly.
Seven different players scored for Virginia in an offensive explosion that was much needed following the lackluster performances of recent weeks. Junior Brian Carroll had five goals, senior Danny Glading had four, freshman Steele Stanwick and sophomore John Haldy each had three while sophomore twins Shamel and Rhamel Bratton as well as senior Garrett Billings tallied a goal a piece. Two seniors, a junior, three sophomores and a freshman. Three middies, three attack and I don’t know what Haldy was playing when he scored (he’s listed as M/A on the roster). Some pretty good balance shown by the Cavaliers.
I really don’t have much to say about this game… the scores at the end of each period say enough. Virginia is simply in another league than Villanova and they played like it.
I had the pleasure of chatting with Tim Fuchs’s father for a few minutes in the first half. Always nice to chat with the players parents. I expect I’ll run into him again in Annapolis on Sunday.
Speaking of which… up next for the #1 seed Cavaliers is #8 seed Johns Hopkins. Oh yeah, and the game is in Annapolis… about what? Twenty miles from the JHU campus? Hopkins defeated unseeded Brown 12-11 in overtime on Saturday to advance to the round of eight.
As usual, I put some photos from the game up in the photo gallery.
I’ll be in Annapolis on Sunday covering the second round (including the UNC/Duke game after ours) so I hope to have some good pictures from the Naval Academy upon my return.

The #1 seeded Virginia Cavaliers suffered a crushing defeat in the semi-finals of the NCAA Tournament today in Foxboro, Massachusetts. The Cornell Big Red beat them in just about every category. A 15 minute difference in time of possession was indicative
Any word on the story behind the team's new uniforms for the game against Villanova? Is it similar to what Nike does with college basketball's "elite" teams, giving them new or alternate jerseys to wear in the NCAA tourney?
