Lacrosse Magazine: Men #1, Women #4
Sunday, December 28 2008 by Tim
Lacrosse Magazine released its pre-season rankings for both the men and women last week. The Virginia men’s lacrosse team has the distinction of being the #1 team on their list, while the Virginia women’s team is #4 behind Northwestern, Syracuse and Duke.
It’s very interesting to look at this list and see how many of the teams we play during the season that are in the top 25 or even just the top 10. Here’s a rundown:
- #2 Syracuse
- #3 Maryland
- #4 Johns Hopkins
- #5 North Carolina
- #6 Cornell
- #8 Duke
In other words, we’re playing four of the top five and six of the top eight… and we’re the #1 team… so… geez. In a lot of years we’d be playing #9 Princeton as well.
Just such a different world than what you have in football or basketball.
On the women’s side, #4 sounds about right though that has us behind ACC foe Duke… As three-time defending ACC champion, I’d hope we’d get a little extra credit and get the bump above them. But I’ll take the #4 slot.
The men open their season Saturday, February 14th against Drexel at Klockner Stadium.
The women begin their season four days later against Virginia Tech, also at Klockner Stadium.
