Virginia Women Post Solid Weekend

Wednesday, September 01 2010 by Tim

The first two weekends of athletics at Virginia have been dominated by the women’s sports. Two weekends ago, on Friday, August 20th, the Virginia Women’s Soccer team defeated Liberty 4-0 at Klöckner Stadium. Two days later they posted another shutout, blasting Colgate 6-0, also at Klöckner.

This past weekend continued a successful start for the women’s programs, as the Women’s Soccer, Field Hockey and Volleyball teams combined for a 6-0-1 record on the weekend. Let’s take a look:

The Women’s Soccer team traveled to Penn State to compete in the Penn State Invitational. On Friday, they played to a 1-1 draw after two overtimes against the host Nittany Lions. Penn State was ranked #11 at the time, so a draw on their home field was nothing to be  ashamed of. The Cavaliers followed up that match with one on Sunday against UConn. The ladies must have some tired legs after the weekend, because that game went to two overtimes as well. This time, however, the Hoos prevailed 1-0. A solid 1-0-1 weekend on the road.

The Volleyball team also went on the road to Pennsylvania – they headed to Temple for the Temple Invitational. On Friday, they took down Valparaiso 3 games to 1. Saturday they had a double-header, taking on Delaware first and beating them 3-1. Then came the host school. Virginia defeated the host Owls 3-2 in their only 5-set match of the weekend. A 3-0 start on the road is a very good start for a team that I think will be making some waves in conference and national play this year.

Field Hockey vs Wake Forest 2009-10-11 017 (1024x768)Rounding out the weekend was the Field Hockey team. This is a team that has one goal in mind: A national championship. And they’re good enough, too. Ranked third to start the season, they went on the road (also to Philadelphia) on Saturday and took on St. Joseph’s (at Temple – are we noticing a trend here?). Virginia dismantled the Hawks 4-0. They then turned their attention to #18 Penn State. There were no draws between the Cavaliers and the Lions here – Virginia took care of Penn State 4-0. Junior Paige Selenski (no, that’s not her pictured to the right – that’s Floor Vogels from last year) had three of the Cavaliers 7 goals on the weekend.

Overall, a dominating performance by the Cavalier Women this weekend. All three teams are back in action this weekend as Volleyball hosts the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup (Liberty, George Washington and North Florida – one of these things is not like the other ones - will be in town), Women’s Soccer hosts Richmond (by the way, Men’s Soccer opens their season hosting UAB and St. John’s this weekend with the odd twist that Virginia Tech will be in town taking on those teams as well – though Virginia and Virginia Tech do not meet until the Hokies return to Charlottesville on October 15th) and Field Hockey hosts Old Dominion on Sunday and Northwestern on Monday.
