Big Weekend Starts Now

Two national championships and an ACC championship are on the line this weekend for the Cavaliers. Baseball is attempting to repeat as ACC champs, while rowing and men’s lacrosse are competing on the national stage. Let’s take a look:

The Virginia baseball team has already gotten things going by beating Boston College 6-4 earlier today in the first game of the ACC Baseball Championships. The early games are pool play, with Florida State and Miami being the other two teams in our pool. The Cavaliers play Florida State tomorrow at 4pm and Miami on Saturday at noon. If we win our pool (which is a bit easier for use based on the odd tie-breaker rules), we’ll play in the ACC Championship game on Sunday at 1pm. Virginia is the defending ACC Champion, but this is the first time we’ve been the #1 seed in the tournament. All of the games are televised and available on V-Pass and WINA.

The Virginia rowing team is headed out to Gold River, California (I’m very unclear on where that is or why that location is hosting) to compete for the national championship. Virginia is the #1 ranked team in the country heading into the event, but they are by no means a lock to win it. This is a very competitive group of boats at the top. Competition starts Friday at 8:45am and runs through Sunday morning.

The Virginia men’s lacrosse team heads back to the Final Four again this weekend. After being ousted by Cornell in the same round last year, Virginia faces the 5-seed Duke in the semi-finals on Saturday at 6:30pm. If they can get past Duke – a team they’ve struggled with recently, but who they took down in the most recent meeting during the ACC Championships – they’ll face the winner of the Cornell and Notre Dame game earlier that day in the championship game. That match will be on Monday – Memorial Day – at 3pm. The semi-final game is available on ESPN2 for TV and WINA and V-Pass for audio. The championship game gets shifted up to ESPN with the same audio options available.
