Dear Old U.Va. Signs Off
Monday, June 27 2011 by Tim - 2 comments
A little over four years ago, I sat at my computer reading TheSabre and saw several U.Va. fans asking how the lacrosse team looked during a recent game. I chimed in with my thoughts and people seemed to appreciate it. Around that same time, I happened to take my camera (I was then using a dinky little point-and-shoot model) to a lacrosse game and snapped some photos. I posted a few of them to TheSabre and once again people seemed to appreciate it. I thought maybe I was on to something. At that time, there wasn’t much coverage in the mainstream media of The University’s exploits in the so-called...
An NCAA Weekend Begins

A couple of weeks ago, I posted about Virginia having a full slate of ACC Championships in one weekend . The ‘Hoos competed in seven championships that weekend, winning two of them (Rowing and Men’s Tennis). That gives Virginia 4 ACC Championships of the 23 that have been contested so far. Only Maryland has more, having won Field Hockey, Men’s Soccer, Wrestling and Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse (you’ll note that three of those were titles that Virginia brought home last year). Of the two remaining (Baseball and Softball), Virginia has a very good shot at winning the baseball title (they stand...
ACC Championships Weekend

Virginia is competing in seven different ACC Championships this weekend. Kind of insane. So let’s take a quick look at each event and what we can expect: Men’s Golf (Friday through Sunday): The Virginia men’s golf team is ranked #19 in the country according to the GCAA Coaches’ Poll. Georgia Tech is far in the lead in the conference, ranked #4 nationally, while Duke is also ahead of the Cavaliers at #18. N.C. State is the final ranked ACC team, coming in at #23. Clemson and Wake Forest are somewhere just outside the top 25. I expect the ‘Hoos to be competitive here, but I would be surprised if...
ACC Wrestling Championships Live Blog

I’m here at John Paul Jones Arena for the 2011 ACC Wrestling Championships and I’ll be providing some commentary while we’re going. I’m sitting with about a dozen wrestling fans so hopefully that’ll make up for my lack of knowledge. So far, Virginia has lost only one match. Here’s the current as we’re almost done with the first round: 125lbs: #2 Matt Snyder had a bye. He’ll face #3 Shane Gentry from Maryland in the semifinals. 133lbs: #3 Joe Spisak had a bye. He’ll face #2 Lou Ruland from Maryland in the semifinals. 141lbs: #5 Nick Nelson upset #2 Chris Diaz of Virginia Tech 6-5 (TB2). He’ll face...
Field Hockey, Women’s Soccer Advance
Monday, November 15 2010 by Tim - 0 comments
While most of the focus around Virginia athletics this weekend was on the start of the basketball season (with wins by both the men and the women – good) and the home finale for the football team (a loss – bad), there was plenty else going on for Virginia. In particular, two teams hosting NCAA events this weekend advanced through two rounds of competition. The field hockey team advanced to the final four – to be held in College Park next weekend – on wins over Michigan State and Princeton. The Michigan State game Saturday morning was a closely fought contest with Michigan State actually leading...

You already know the details of most of these events, so I won’t go into them too much. Just wanted to give a quick rundown of what is going on this weekend in Charlottesville. Friday 11am, Aquatic & Fitness Center: Swimming & Diving takes on Virginia Tech and Princeton in the UVA Fall Invitational 5pm, Klockner Stadium: Women’s Soccer hosts the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Lehigh 7pm, John Paul Jones Arena: Men’s Basketball home opener versus William & Mary 7:30pm, Klockner Stadium: UNC-Greensboro and South Carolina meet in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament...
ACC Championship Season is Upon Us

You know things are starting to get exciting when the ACC changes its website to make it harder for you to get to the information you’re looking for on a daily basis. That annoyance notwithstanding, ACC schools have begun competing for conference titles this past weekend and the ‘Hoos are in the thick of things for several sports. Let’s take a look: Cross Country The cross country teams traveled up to Boston College last weekend to compete in the ACC Championships. There was some stiff competition on both the men’s and women’s sides, as six of the women’s teams and five of the men’s teams were...
Virginia Women Post Solid Weekend
Wednesday, September 01 2010 by Tim - 0 comments
The first two weekends of athletics at Virginia have been dominated by the women’s sports. Two weekends ago, on Friday, August 20th, the Virginia Women’s Soccer team defeated Liberty 4-0 at Klöckner Stadium. Two days later they posted another shutout, blasting Colgate 6-0, also at Klöckner. This past weekend continued a successful start for the women’s programs, as the Women’s Soccer, Field Hockey and Volleyball teams combined for a 6-0-1 record on the weekend. Let’s take a look: The Women’s Soccer team traveled to Penn State to compete in the Penn State Invitational. On Friday, they played to...
Big Weekend Starts Now

Two national championships and an ACC championship are on the line this weekend for the Cavaliers. Baseball is attempting to repeat as ACC champs, while rowing and men’s lacrosse are competing on the national stage. Let’s take a look: The Virginia baseball team has already gotten things going by beating Boston College 6-4 earlier today in the first game of the ACC Baseball Championships. The early games are pool play, with Florida State and Miami being the other two teams in our pool. The Cavaliers play Florida State tomorrow at 4pm and Miami on Saturday at noon. If we win our pool (which is a...
The NCAAs Come to Charlottesville (Carolina, Too)
Friday, May 14 2010 by Tim - 0 comments
If Foxfield weekend was a weekend all about ACC Championships, the weekend starting today is all about NCAA Championships. No national champions will be crowned this weekend, but there are a lot of NCAA Championship events occurring, specifically here in Charlottesville. There will be eight NCAA Championship contests held in Charlottesville this weekend and Cavalier teams will be competing in up to six of them. Toss in a baseball weekend series with the Tar Heels (who are fighting for that last slot in the ACC Championship later this month) and we’ve got a great sports weekend here in The Hook...
