Lalich Charged with Being a College Student
Wednesday, July 23 2008 by Tim
Pardon me if this post title seems a bit sarcastic, but... well... it is.
According to WINA (link is probably temporary since this is a recent news listing), presumptive 2008 starting QB Peter Lalich has been charged with underage possession of alcohol.
I should note that he was not arrested by a police office. Rather "The charge was filed July 13th by an ABC agent..." Anyone who knows anything about the primary ABC officer in Charlottesville will understand why I point that out.
I have two thoughts on this matter. Some might find them in conflict. I, however, don't.
- As a [presumptive] starting quarterback on a Division I football program in a major conference, Lalich should know better than to get in trouble. For anything. I don't care how mundane.
- This kind of charge should not even be an issue in a college town. At worst, this should have been turned over to the University and handled internally (VSOC anyone?). I could get into a whole different discussion over this, but seriously. A 20 year old in a college town being in possession of alcohol? Get out of here!
It looks like this will have negligible impact (except maybe to help Lalich keep his head screwed on straight for the season) given the continuation. But this is still a bit troubling (on both sides).

The article I linked to just mentioned possession. Though now that I look at some other articles that have popped up since, I see that most of them (though not all) say possession and purchasing.
That changes my opinion of this slightly. Its a lot more stupid to try to purchase it when under age. I still don't think it should be illegal. But it is, and he, as a [presumptive] starting Division I quarterback, should know better than to even be caught possessing it, much less purchasing it.
Slightly as an aside, I'd be curious to know what the actual facts of the charge are. There are enough sources saying just possession that there's obviously some confusion - and like you (Mahini) said in your post today, I'd like to know if he was busted at the ABC store with a fake ID (very dumb), Shady Grady (dumb) or just ordering a drink at Biltmore (less dumb).
Virginia redshirt freshman wide receiver Jared Green had the honor of introducing his father, former “Fastest Man” in the NFL, Darrell Green at the latter’s enshrinement into the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio this evening. I hadn’t originally planned
Not just possession? Also for purchasing, right?
