On London: Quotes
Wednesday, December 09 2009 by Tim - 0 comments
I’ve been very impressed by the things that some people have been saying about Mike London since he was hired on Monday. It’s not necessarily specific things that people are saying about him, it’s just the level of enthusiasm that people seem to have about him. It’s almost as if the excitement level surrounding the program in the state instantly increased when it was announced that he was the head coach. So I wanted to group together here some of the things that were said about him in various sources. This is just a taste of the quotes, as there are many more out there: Virginia High School Coaches...
London To Coach Cavs

Well, that didn’t take long. Less than 48 hours after a heart-breaking loss to Appalachian State, University of Richmond Head Coach (and former Cav assistant) Mike London has been selected to succeed the ousted Al Groh. A press conference has been scheduled for 1pm. We’ll have more on this decision later. The Nightmare (Finally) Ends

I suppose that title could refer to the end of the Al Groh era, but this is (mostly) going to be about the 2009 season. I want to take a look at what went wrong, what (if anything) went right and maybe why. Also, we will take an early look at what we can expect next season. The season started with a good deal of hope. Obviously, coming off a down year, optimism was guarded. But, with a new offensive system in place, and a lot of young talent impressing in the spring and fall camps, there was potential…And then the season began. The opening game was against I-AA William & Mary, a matchup the...
Groh Dismissed from U.Va.

After lots of speculation, it’s official. Al Groh coached his last game yesterday. Here’s the official release : CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Craig Littlepage, University of Virginia director of athletics, today announced that Al Groh would not be retained as head football coach, effective immediately. Littlepage met with Groh, who just concluded his ninth season, earlier today to inform the coach of his decision. "There is not a coach in the college game who has worked harder than Al Groh in trying to build a football program. Football is his life and he dedicated himself to the University and...
2009 Game Previews: Virginia Tech

I am, once again, out of town for Thanksgiving, and therefore did not have time to write my customary preview. So, this will be short and sweet. OK, not sweet. But short. Besides, at this point, I'm pretty sure nobody wants to read about our football team anyway, unless it is about new coaches. That's certainly all anybody is talking about. This week is the big game, the matchup against Virginia Tech. Scott Stadium is expected to be about 50% full of Hokies, which sucks. The team could certainly use the fan support, and it would be nice to send Groh out with some cheers. Of course, if the game...
An Early Look at Potential Head Coaches

By now, everybody knows Al Groh will get pink slipped after the Virginia Tech game. Whether he resigns, retires, or gets fired is irrelevant. The important thing is that we will have a new coach next season. Many people have thrown in their 2 cents about who we should hire, or who we might hire. MelbourneHoo has made public the characteristics of ideal candidate . Once the season ends, we will definitely let you know who we would like to see get the job. I haven’t made up my mind on that yet. What I want to do is briefly introduce the various candidates whose names are floating around on...
2009 Football Previews: Clemson

Another week, another poor performance. The Hoos had many chances to beat Boston College last week, but could not make the plays they needed to make. Boston College is a decent team, but they played a bad game and still beat us. If we can’t win a home game against a team that comes out and lays an egg, what’s the point? This week, we go down to Clemson, SC for the first time since 2003 (yay ACC expansion!). The Tigers need a win to clinch the Atlantic Division title. Actually, that’s not necessarily true, because BC plays UNC at noon. If BC loses, Clemson clinches and then our game is meaningless...
2009 Football Previews: Boston College

Can it get any worse? I really thought losing to Duke would be the low point. I actually said to Tim, “even if we lose 100-0, I’ll just be like at least it wasn’t Duke.” The problem is, I was just as disappointed in our showing against Miami. It wasn’t the score, although obviously 52-17 is difficult to swallow. It was the effort, or lack thereof. The offense was horrible. The defense missed far too many tackles and assignments. The special teams breakdowns continued. What is left? As has been discussed ad nauseum (I’ve always wanted to say that), Al Groh is done at the end of this year. I fully...
Virginia Injury Report: Miami

So… I guess Verica will start. But does anyone think there’s any chance we see Smalls? On a more serious note, it’s good to see Aaron Clark moved to just questionable… I still feel bad for that kid. Out None Doubtful Jameel Sewell (shoulder) Questionable Aaron Clark (knee) Matt Conrath (ankle) Probable Nate Collins (hip) Steve Greer (shoulder) Rashawn Jackson (arm) Zane Parr (knee) Brandon Woods (shoulder)...
2009 Football Previews: Miami

First of all, allow me to apologize for not writing much about the past two games. I attended the games, and then spend the following couple of days recovering the trip. Had the games been somewhat less depressing, I might’ve written something, but I simply could not bring myself to write anything. Last week’s game was just about the last straw for many Virginia fans. The announced attendance of about 41 thousand is laughable. I looked around the stadium at various points during the game, and I would be surprised if the actual attendance was much over 30 thousand. Still, 41 thousand is the number...
