The Story of Wahee the Wahoo

Tuesday, May 10 2011 by Tim - 1 comments

No, this isn’t a children’s story, though you’re excused from having not known that based on the title. Instead, this is a recruiting story – and a big one at that. The news sprung up everywhere last night that Mike London and the Virginia football team had received a commitment from Wil Wahee of Norfolk Christian School (Norfolk, Va). Now, people are buzzing about Wahee by himself (and who wouldn’t, with a name like Wahee). But there’s additional buzz surrounding NCS athletes Kwontie Moore, Courtnye Wynn and Mario Nixon. All three are being heavily recruited and considered by many to be “battleground...

Spring Game Thoughts

Monday, April 04 2011 by Tiki - 0 comments

Spring Game Thoughts So I finally got to attend a spring football game, and I have to say, I was mildly underwhelmed. A lot of it was the weather, and obviously the hangover from the lacrosse game. Not to mention my hangover from Friday night. Overall, I thought the experience was somewhat dull. Nobody really seemed all that excited, from the crowd to the players to the coaches. The biggest cheer of the day was for Chris Long. As for the game itself, again, it was underwhelming. Both offenses really struggled to get anything going. It is difficult to say, for sure, whether this was because of strong...

Spring Practice Preview

Tuesday, March 15 2011 by Tiki - 0 comments

Doesn’t it seem like the season just ended? I realize that it was actually about 4 months ago, but it feels like just yesterday I was sitting there watching us lose to the Hokies for the 4 millionth time. Spring practice is upon us, and that is good news. This is a team that struggled at time, especially defensively, but did show signs of life. I believe the program is headed in the right direction, and I think this spring will be a big part of that. There are several battles to pay attention to over the course of the next few weeks, plus there are a handful of younger players who will get chances...

Signing Day 2011

Wednesday, March 02 2011 by Tiki - 1 comments

It’s a month since signing day, and I’ve spent every waking moment since that day watching film of our incoming recruits. That’s really not true. But, I did watch film on each player and I've got some observations. Chances are, if you’re reading this, you already know that we had a very good class, ranked in the top 20 nationally by ESPN, Rivals and Scout. Below, I’ll give my observations on each player. Already Enrolled Two players in this class have already enrolled, in order to participate in spring practice. While these guys are part of the 2011 class, they don’t...

One of the top players in the state of Virginia, Demetrius Nicholson, committed to the Hoos today. Coming out of Bayside HS in Virginia Beach, where Nicholson played CB and WR, and helped lead the team to an undefeated regular season, and to the state semifinals. Nicholson recorded 19 pass break-ups and 2 interceptions, as well as 38 receptions for 598 yards and 8 TDs. Nicholson was also a bigtime performer on specials teams as a punt and kickoff returner. Nicholson was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Virginia. Nicholson is ranked the #2 player in the state by Rivals, as...

2010 Football Previews–Virginia Tech

Friday, November 26 2010 by Tiki - 4 comments

To many Virginia fans, and most Virginia Tech fans, this is the most important week of the year. Many of the players will say the same thing, and while the coaches may not say it aloud, they probably think the same thing. The Hoos and Hokies rivalry has taken on added significance since the Hokies joined the ACC, and a few times the game has been for the right to play in the ACC championship game. This year is not one of those times. The hoos have already been eliminated from bowl contention, and Hokies have already clinched the Coastal Division championship. The Hokies would like to continue their...

2010 Football Previews–Boston College

Thursday, November 18 2010 by Tiki - 0 comments

The 2010 Cavaliers were known to be young and inexperienced. We expected growing pains, and we expected mistakes. We also expected improvements over the course of the season. We have seen the former. There have been myriad mistakes, and some very sloppy play. What we have not seen is improvements. The problems that plagued us early in the season are the same problems that are plaguing us now, ten games into the season. Some of these things are individual mistakes, such as dropped passes and interceptions. These mistakes tend to be physical in nature, and often will not improve over the course of...

Ras-I Dowling, Landon Bradley Out For The Season

Monday, November 15 2010 by Tim - 0 comments

The University of Virginia today announced that pre-season All-American Cornerback, senior Ras-I Dowling – who had played only sparingly during the season – will miss the remainder of the season due to injury. Dowling suffered a fracture in his ankle during the first quarter of Saturday’s game against the Maryland Terrapins. Also announced as done for the season is junior Landon Bradley. He will have surgery on his knee tomorrow. Tough luck for those two fellas, Dowling in particular. Hopefully he can get his injury under control and really show well at the combine. And hopefully Bradley gets himself...

2010 Football Previews–Maryland

Thursday, November 11 2010 by Tiki - 0 comments

It will be senior day on Saturday in Charlottesville, as the Hoos (4-5, 1-4 ACC) will face the Maryland Terrapins (6-3, 3-2). A year ago, the Hoos won just 3 games, but one of those was a road win over the Terps in a monsoon. This year, the Hoos have been as up and down as anybody in the country. The same defense that shut down the USC offense gave up 55 points to Duke. The same team that scored 48 against Duke scored just 10 against UNC. You could make a valid argument that every single unit and every single player on the team has had some inconsistency. A Terrapin team that was expected to struggle...
