W Basketball Escapes Hurricanes in OT

Friday, February 20 2009 by Tim

The Virginia Women’s Basketball team was decked out in pink uniforms last night for the game against Miami. Judging by how the first 39 minutes of the game went, the Hoos may want to consider an alternative way to honor Kay Yow and the PinkZone/Breast Cancer Awareness issues.

Miami jumped out to a lead as large as 13 at various points during the game. The Hoos hung around, even taking the lead for a while (at 48-47 I believe). But Miami fought tough. It took a circus shot with Lyndra Littles looking at the floor while she blindly threw the ball in the general direction of the basket to send the game into overtime. I REALLY hope that play ends up on VSTV.

In overtime, the Cavaliers generally dominated the flow of the game. The Hurricanes managed only two buckets the entire extra period - a three pointer near the end of the shot clock and a two pointer after a TERRIBLE out-of-bounds call by the ref gave the ball to Miami under the basket. The Hoos, on the other hand, dropped in 14 points in the extra period to cruise to the win.

For those keeping track: Lyndra Littles had 27 points, Monica Wright had 21 and Aisha Mohammed had 16 points and 10 rebounds for what seems like her 100th double-double. Those 27 points moved Lyndra Littles into 5th place on the all-time scoring list at U.Va. - jumping up above Cathy Grimes and Tora Suber. Monica Wright is in 8th place and will likely surpass the same two players in another three or four games (did I mention she's only a Junior?).

Here are a few pictures from the game so everyone can see the pink uniforms and the special game ball. As usual, more pictures are in the photo gallery.
