Hoos Advance to Omaha in Stunning Fashion

Tuesday, June 14 2011 by Tim - 0 comments

Bottom of the 9th. Trailing 2-1. Two outs. Two strikes. No one on. Dreams of Omaha fading quickly. ESPN shows the Virginia dugout – the ‘Hoos look dejected. It all comes down to this. But one man kept his poise. And why not? He’s the leading hitter on the #1 team in America. David Coleman confidently awaits his pitch. When he gets it, he singles up the middle. Then in comes Mitchell Shifflett – Virginia’s fastest player – to pinch run. Then another man kept his poise. And why not? He had already helped the Cavs secure the Game 1 victory with a three run homer to left field. Jared King confidently...

Hoos Lose to Miami (Again)

Thursday, March 10 2011 by Tim - 3 comments

Don’t expect much of a recap from me. That was one of the hardest games to watch that I’ve ever witnessed. Virginia loses to Miami in overtime (again) after being up by as much as 11. The ‘Canes outscored the ‘Hoos by 10 in the last minute. I’ve never felt this bad after a game before. I can’t imagine how the players feel.

Cavs Crush Terps Senior Day Dreams

Saturday, March 05 2011 by Tim - 0 comments

Sammy Zeglinski scored 25 and Assane Sene added what has to be a career high 15 points as the Virginia Cavaliers – picked to finish 11th in the conference – finished their ACC slate at 7-9 and assuring them a 7th place finish in the conference. No one could have guessed that this team – without its senior leader and leading scorer for most of conference play and without another senior and junior for large stretched – could have accomplished what it did this season. The Cavs finish just a few missed free throws against Wake and Miami away from a winning conference record. The ‘Hoos finished the...

An Opportunity Taken

Tuesday, March 01 2011 by Tim - 0 comments

I said this game was an opportunity. Apparently the team agreed. Freshman Joe Harris led all scorers with 19 points as Virginia defeated N.C. State 69-58 in the home finale for the Cavaliers. But the story of the game was the seniors on their senior night. Mustapha Farrakhan, playing in front of his grandfather , had 15 points and Will Sherrill notched 14 points on the strength of 4 for 5 shooting from behind the arc. The former walk-on also added 8 rebounds while having no turnovers. With the win, Virginia guarantees that they’ll finish no lower than 9th in the ACC this season – the Cavaliers...

Hoos Hang On, Beat Hokies

Sunday, December 05 2010 by Tim - 0 comments

With 2:00 left in the second half at Cassel Coliseum tonight, Virginia held a slim 51-49 lead over the favored Hokies. As a Virginia fan, it was probably hard not to think about last year’s late-game collapse that led to the Tech victory. Especially because, you know, the announcers brought it up (my blood pressure thanks you, TV announcers). But this time the endgame went the way the Cavaliers wanted. The Hoos – helped by a Jeff Allen intentional foul, free throw shooting and a couple clutch rebounds by Mike Scott – beat Virginia Tech 57-54 in the ACC opener for both teams. If Virginia had been...

Virginia Stuns #13 Minnesota

Monday, November 29 2010 by Tim - 1 comments

About a year and a half ago, the Virginia fan-base was buzzing with ideas of who the next men’s basketball head coach would be. Two names that had various fans excited were Oklahoma’s Jeff Capel and Minnesota’s Tubby Smith. Within a span of a week, Virginia’s selection – Tony Bennett – has now beaten both of them. The win over Oklahoma wasn’t that impressive. The Sooners are bad. They lost to Division II Chaminade the next day. But the win over Minnesota was something else. The 13th-ranked Gophers were 6-0 on the season, with wins over then-#8 North Carolina and solid West Virginia squad. Minnesota...

Hoos Rebound Versus Sooners

Wednesday, November 24 2010 by Tiki - 0 comments

After one of the worst performances in recent UVA basketball history, the Hoos bounced back in a big way. Starting the game hot, they opened up a 12-0 lead over Oklahoma before the first TV timeout. They never looked back. Mike Scott had perhaps the best game of his career, finishing with 27 points and 15 rebounds, and shooting 13-15 from the stripe. Point Guard Jontel Evans also had a great game, despite scoring only 5 points. He had 6 assists, no turnovers, and 3 steals to go along with some great perimeter defense. Defense was really the name of the game for the Hoos. Less than 24 hours after...

Huskies Pounce on Cavs

Tuesday, November 23 2010 by Tim - 0 comments

I’ll admit that I didn’t watch this game live – staying up until 2am just wasn’t in the cards for a Monday night. But I dutifully turned the game on this morning from the DVR in the hopes that U.Va. would have pulled off a major upset. Alas, it wasn’t even close. Washington out-everything’d Virginia in the game. Well, everything except turning the ball over. Virginia did more of that. They took 11 more shots and they made 18 more shots. They took 10 more three pointers and they made 13 more. They grabbed 5 more rebounds (Virginia did win the offensive rebounding tally). They had 22 assists to Virginia...

Landesberg’s Season Ends, Cavs Fall to Maryland

Sunday, March 07 2010 by Tim - 0 comments

As I sat in JPJ yesterday watching the team warm up (I got there very early, so I saw pretty much all the warm-ups), I had this nervous feeling about a missing person from the floor: Virginia’s leading scorer, Sylven Landesberg. Initially, I just chalked it up to the injury problems he’s been having lately – he was probably in the back gym or the training room or something like that. But when the team came out for the final warmup (the more public one where they get to run in to the band playing) and Sly wasn’t with them… I knew something else had to be up. A quick jump onto TheSabre told me that...

Baseball Opens Season in Style

Saturday, February 20 2010 by Tim - 1 comments

I’ll have more on the opening weekend of the 2010 Virginia Baseball season after it’s all said and done, but I wanted to toss something up here about the game yesterday. The ‘Hoos fell behind the East Carolina Pirates 0-2 in the bottom of the first inning, but Sophomore star Danny Hultzen settled into a groove and went 5 scoreless innings afterwards. The Cavaliers would score twice in each of the 4th, 6th and 7th innings to take a 6-2 lead. The aforementioned first inning issues and a couple of late pitching miscues notwithstanding, it was a very solid opening outing against a VERY solid East Carolina...
