Hoos Advance to Omaha in Stunning Fashion

Tuesday, June 14 2011 by Tim - 0 comments

Bottom of the 9th. Trailing 2-1. Two outs. Two strikes. No one on. Dreams of Omaha fading quickly. ESPN shows the Virginia dugout – the ‘Hoos look dejected. It all comes down to this. But one man kept his poise. And why not? He’s the leading hitter on the #1 team in America. David Coleman confidently awaits his pitch. When he gets it, he singles up the middle. Then in comes Mitchell Shifflett – Virginia’s fastest player – to pinch run. Then another man kept his poise. And why not? He had already helped the Cavs secure the Game 1 victory with a three run homer to left field. Jared King confidently...

Cal’s Joanne Boyle Named UVA Head Coach

Saturday, April 09 2011 by Tim - 0 comments

After several days of “yes she is, no she isn’t” back and forth, we finally have official confirmation: Former Duke women’s basketball player and current California  women’s basketball head coach Joanne Boyle has been named the successor to Hall of Famer Debbie Ryan, who stepped down last month after 34 years. There will be a press conference on Monday at noon to officially announce her, but the official Virginia Athletics site has the press release already. In six years at Cal, Boyle led the Bears to four NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT Tournament appearances, including winning the...

Wahoo in Review: Tony Bennett

Tuesday, March 22 2011 by Ben - 0 comments

We’ll be posting a retrospective look on the Cavs’ 2010-2011 season every so often in the offseason.  It will be full of underwhelming statistics, unsubstantiated claims, and unmitigated rumors.  Not really, but wouldn’t that be fun? In truth, this space will be just filled with my unvarnished opinions. Today’s Wahoo in Review: Tony Bennett. Anyone who has studied Economics in any depth knows that, on the whole, the field boils down to a constrained optimization problem: maximize utility (happiness, if it were) subject to a budget constraint.  It’s not unlike how Tony Bennett operated...

Debbie Ryan To Step Down After 34 Years

Saturday, March 12 2011 by Tim - 0 comments

Debbie Ryan – who has been head coach of the Virginia Women’s Basketball team for longer than I have been alive – will step down from that position following the season. Virginia is currently waiting to find out if they’ll get a bid to the WNIT this season. If they do, Ryan will coach the team through the rest of the season. If they don’t get a bid, their season and her coaching career are over. From the sound of her quotes, it looks like she will stick around the University, which is a very good thing. Coach Ryan has been a terrific ambassador for Virginia. For the full press release, including...

Hoos Lose to Miami (Again)

Thursday, March 10 2011 by Tim - 3 comments

Don’t expect much of a recap from me. That was one of the hardest games to watch that I’ve ever witnessed. Virginia loses to Miami in overtime (again) after being up by as much as 11. The ‘Canes outscored the ‘Hoos by 10 in the last minute. I’ve never felt this bad after a game before. I can’t imagine how the players feel.

Virginia Left Off 2011 All-ACC Lists Completely

Monday, March 07 2011 by Tim - 3 comments

I suppose this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to me, but the All-ACC lists (First Team, Second Team, Third Team, Freshman and Defensive) were announced today and there’s not a single Cavalier name to be found. Virginia is the only school in the 12-member ACC not to have a representative on the list. North Carolina leads the way with seven selections (Three Second Team, one Third Team, two Freshman and one Defensive). Duke comes in second with three selections (Two First Team and one Defensive). Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Maryland and Virginia Tech each had two selections...

Tony Bennett For ACC Coach of the Year?

Monday, March 07 2011 by Tim - 1 comments

No, he won’t win the award. Roy Williams probably will. And several other coaches are deserving as well (Donahue would get a strong look if I were a voter, just because I expect a lot out of Roy/K but I wasn’t expecting much out of Donahue). But that’s not the point of this article. The point of this article is that people are taking note of what Tony’s done with this program. And I’m not just talking about random people on TheSabre . I’m talking about real people. Like ESPN people. OK, it’s mostly just Andy Katz. But I have two quotes from him: In his championship week preview , he says would...

Big Swingin’ O

Monday, March 07 2011 by Ben - 0 comments

By many measures, Virginia absolutely crushed Maryland on offense on Saturday – nothing the Terps did could stop them. The most amazing thing, to these eyes, was the contrast between that game and the previous one versus Maryland. In that contest, Virginia’s optimal strategy might have been to have Sammy Zeglinski shoot as soon as he crossed half court (or some other such nonsense). It got me thinking: what are the biggest swings in offensive efficiency (points per possession) against the same opponent this season? (Power 6 conferences only) Team vs. Opponent Off. Eff Game 1 Off. Eff...

Quick ACC Tournament Update

Sunday, March 06 2011 by Tim - 0 comments

Updated 8:15pm with results of Florida State at N.C. State. Updated 4:30pm with results of Miami at Georgia Tech. There are two games today that Cavalier fans should be watching closely as they impact our seeding and matches in the ACC Tournament. The first is Miami at Georgia Tech at 2:30pm. The second is Florida State at N.C. State. Let’s take a look at the scenarios (I’ll do them in rough order of likelihood, from most likely to least likely): Miami and Florida State win: In this scenario, Virginia would finish tied for 7th in the conference with both Maryland and Miami. Miami would get the...

Cavs Crush Terps Senior Day Dreams

Saturday, March 05 2011 by Tim - 0 comments

Sammy Zeglinski scored 25 and Assane Sene added what has to be a career high 15 points as the Virginia Cavaliers – picked to finish 11th in the conference – finished their ACC slate at 7-9 and assuring them a 7th place finish in the conference. No one could have guessed that this team – without its senior leader and leading scorer for most of conference play and without another senior and junior for large stretched – could have accomplished what it did this season. The Cavs finish just a few missed free throws against Wake and Miami away from a winning conference record. The ‘Hoos finished the...
