Charlottesville Regional Update – Hoos, Red Storm Win

Saturday, June 05 2010 by Tiki

In the early game of the Charlottesville regional, the St John’s Red Storm took care of the VCU Rams 8-6, eliminating the Rams.  The Johnnies hit 4 HR’s on the day, including 2 by Matt Wessinger.

After VCU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a Brent Mikionis 2 run shot in the top of the 1st, St John’s hit 3 HRs of their own in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.  VCU tied it up in the 2nd, only to see St John’s retake the lead, 5-3 on Wessinger’s 2nd shot in as many innings.

A couple more runs for the Red Storm in the bottom of the 4th, and another in the 8th made the score 8-3 going into the 9th.  VCU’s valiant comeback attempt in the 9th fell short, though they did manage to get the tying run on base.

The high scoring output of the first game continued into the nightcap, as the Hoos and Rebels smacked each other around to the tune of a 13-7 Hoos victory

Danny Hultzen earned his 10th win of the season, but did not have his best stuff.  Danny gave up 6 earned runs on 7 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.  Luckily for him, the Hoos continued their hot hitting.  The Hoos scored a run in the 1st, two in the 2nd, and four each in the 3rd and 4th.  By the time Ole Miss’ starting (and losing) pitcher, Aaron Barrett, was removed with 2 outs in the 3rd, the Hoos had scored 6 runs, although 3 of those were unearned.  Brandon Kline pitched the final 3 innings, giving up a run on 2 hits and a walk, picking up his third save of the season.

In total, the Hoos pounded out 17 hits. including 6 extra base hits.  For the second game in a row, each and every batter in the Hoos starting lineup picked up at least one hit.  The game’s top hitter was John Barr, who finished 4-4 with a double and 4 RBI.

For the Rebels, Taylor Hashman HR’d and drove in 3.

The Rebels and Red Storm face each other tomorrow at 1PM in an elimination game.  The Hoos will take on the winner of that game at 6PM.  Check back here tomorrow for a link to our Cover It Live blog of the game.

Thanks to Tim, TimoniumHoo, and everybody else, for a tremendous job of “live-blogging” the game.  We all appreciate it.  If only there was TV coverage.  Maybe next year.
