Cavs Take Game 1 From Jackets
Saturday, April 10 2010 by Tim
After losing the series last weekend down at N.C. State, the Virginia Cavalier baseball team was rewarded by coming home to face the new #2 team in the country. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets weren’t far behind the Cavaliers, who were ranked #1 before the loss to the Wolfpack and they slid ahead of them this week.
So what happens when the #2 and #4 teams in the country face off on the diamond in Charlottesville? A terrific game apparently.
You can check out the full recap in the VirginiaSports.com article, but know this: The Cavaliers beat the Jackets at their own game. GT is known for being a terrific hitting team. So how did the ‘Hoos win? Well, it involved a little bit of everything, but in particular two home-runs in Virginia’s pitcher-friendly park: Dan Grovatt hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 7th for the final margin, while Proscia and Cannon both homered earlier in the game.
In what was billed as one of the better pitching match-ups of the season, Virginia’s Danny Hultzen outdueled Tech’s ace Deck McGuire. Hultzen went 7 innings, giving up 4 earned runs and striking out 11. McGuire went 6.2 innings while giving up 6 earned runs and striking out 6.
The teams will be back on the diamond today at 4pm, which is ironically the same time as the Lacrosse team takes on North Carolina in the Big City Classic. Could be a huge day for the Cavaliers!
