Cavs Look to Sweep ‘Noles
Sunday, March 20 2011 by Tim
Almost every Virginia fan will, at some point in their life, refer to a Cavalier team as the Cardiac Cavs.
The first two games of the weekend baseball series against Florida State will definitely fall into that category. Virginia was behind in both games (3-1 in the first game, 3-2 and 4-3 in the second game), but ended up winning both by 1 run in the 11th inning.
On Friday, Junior Steven Proscia hit a ball that reached the left field wall, easily scoring fellow Junior John Hicks who had reached on a strikingly similar double.
In the bottom of the 11th on Saturday, lead-off batter Jared King connected on a 1-1 pitch and sent it about 390 feet over the left-center wall. The walk-off homerun was the first homer of the junior’s career.
If Virginia could pull off the sweep today at 1pm, it would mean that the Cavaliers have series sweeps over the two highest ranked opponents on their schedule. Clemson began the season #10 according to Baseball America and Florida State began the season #12 according to the same poll. Virginia was #15 in the Baseball America poll. Either way, they would have series wins over the two highest ranked opponents on their schedule – a very impressive feat.
Virginia currently stands in first place in the ACC. The Cavaliers are tied with Miami, North Carolina and Georgia Tech in the Coastal at 5-0 in conference play, but hold an edge in the overall record. Virginia is 19-1 on the season. The next closest team is North Carolina at 17-3, and then Georgia Tech at 16-4.

Somewhat disappointing to lose game 3, but still a great series win. I'm still a little bit concerned about the lack of power from the lineup. The team slugging percentage is 100 points below what it was last year.
Hopefully as the weather warms up, the bats will too.
I now kind of wish I had made it out for one of those two games. However, I was at the lacrosse game during the Saturday game. It was pretty cool to hear the roar of the crowd from the baseball game when King hit his shot.
