Baseball Wins ACC Tournament

Sunday, May 24 2009 by Tim

The Virginia baseball team defeated Florida State just minutes ago by a score of 6-3 in the ACC Tournament title game to claim the 2009 ACC Crown. This is the first ACC Baseball Championship for Virginia since 1996. The Cavaliers beat the #1, #2 and #3 seeds on their way to the title.

The baseball title gives Virginia more ACC titles than any other school in the conference for the ‘08-‘09 school year.

Now for the bad news: Even with the best record in college baseball and an ACC title… Virginia doesn’t get to host a regional. While the game was still going on, the NCAA announced the hosts for the regionals and the Cavaliers were not among the teams listed. ACC teams Georgia Tech, Clemson, Florida State and North Carolina were all selected to host – the latter three all fell to the Cavaliers during the ACC tournament.

Announcements of where the Cavaliers will be headed for regional play will be made tomorrow at 12:30pm on ESPN.

And U. Va. gets rewarded for winning the ACC tournament by being put in possibly the hardest bracket ever.
