Matt Packer on Wallace Watch List

Wednesday, December 10 2008 by Tim - 0 comments

Virginia Junior pitcher Matt Packer is on the list of players being considered for the 2009 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year award. While his record last year was decent , 6-3, what likely got him on the list is that he had the lowest ERA in all of Division I baseball last year – 1.14. Have I mentioned that I’m looking forward to baseball season?

Orange Takes Game 4, 11-3

Thursday, October 16 2008 by Tiki - 0 comments

Finally, in the 4th game of the Orange and Blue World Series, we got a glimpse of some offensive firepower, as the Orange team scored 11 runs in just 7 innings to tie the overall series at 2 games apiece. After the Blue team scored 2 runs in the first inning on two doubles, a single and a sac fly, junior SS Tyler Cannon led off the bottom of the frame with a solo shot to left center field.  Then, with one out, freshman 3B Steven Proscia doubled, and scored on a single by fellow freshman Danny Hultzen, Orange’s starting, and winning, pitcher.  Hultzen would later HR leading off the 7th...

Orange & Blue World Series: Orange Takes Game 2, Blue Game 3

Tuesday, October 14 2008 by Tiki - 0 comments

On Sunday afternoon, the Orange team tied up the Orange and Blue World Series with a 3-2 win.  On Monday evening, the Blue team answered with a come-from-behind 5-4 win. Game 2 was dominated by the pitching staffs.  A pair of starters, freshman Will Roberts for the Blue team and sophomore Tyler Wilson for the Orange team, each threw 5 solid innings.  Wilson gave up 5 hits and 2 earned runs, striking out 6.  Roberts gave up just 2 hits, giving up a single unearned run and whiffed 2.  Sophomore hurler, Robert Morey, pitched 2.2 hitless innings for the win.  Sean Lucas...

Blue Team Wins First Game of Orange and Blue World Series

Wednesday, October 08 2008 by Tiki - 0 comments

After blowing an early 3 run lead, and then falling behind in the top of the ninth, blue team CF and leadoff hitter Jarret Parker hit a run scoring triple in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.  Freshman catcher John Hicks then doubled in fellow freshman Jared King in the bottom of the 10th for the walk-off win.  Junior starter Matt Parker combined with senior Robert Poutier to throw 9 full innings, allowing a combined 3 ER.  However, five errors (including two from SS King) led to 2 unearned runs and a 5-4 Orange lead in the ninth.  Another freshman,...

Thompson Signs With the Braves

Monday, August 04 2008 by Tim - 2 comments

U.Va. senior pitcher Jacob Thompson has made his decision to sign with the Atlanta Braves instead of returning for his final season at Virginia. Thompson is the all-time wins leader as a Cavalier, though he had some tough times this past season. He just never seemed to settle completely into the groove that he had the previous year. The Braves took him in the fifth round of this year’s MLB draft and will reported pay him a signing bonus of nearly $200,000. There’s one interesting twist to this story: The team’s rookie league has Thompson going to… Danville, Virginia, which just happens to be his...

Joe Koshansky Update

Thursday, July 10 2008 by Tiki - 0 comments

Joe hit his 2nd career HR last night. A 2 run shot in the 8th inning, off Guillermo Mota. It was the back end of a back to back HR. He struck out in his 2 other ABs. He was also hit by a pitch. Joe is now 2-12 (.167 Batting Average) with 2 HRs, 3 RBI. And 7 Ks. The power is nice. Some more consistent contact would be helpful though.

No Ballard Tonight

Wednesday, July 09 2008 by Tiki - 3 comments

The Texas Rangers decided not to call up Mike Ballard. They would have had to add him to their 40 man roster to call him up. If they do that, they would have to keep him there, or risk losing him in the Rule V draft this offseason.

Ballard Gets Called Up

Wednesday, July 09 2008 by Tiki - 0 comments

More Hoos in the majors . Mike Ballard was called up from AA Frisco to pitch for the Rangers tonight. He is facing the Angels, and Jared Weaver. Ballard has pitched well of late, with 5 straight wins. His peripheral numbers aren't great, with 29 walks and 107 H in 88 IP. However, he's done a good job of keeping the ball in the ballpark, and has struck out 7 batters per 9 innings. The Angels are in first place, but are far from a great team, and are winning more with pitching than with offense. Meanwhile, Texas has the top offense in the majors, and the worst pitching staff (by quite a margin I...

Koshansky’s First Career HR

Sunday, July 06 2008 by Tiki - 1 comments

In his first AB of the season, after being called up yesterday, Joe Koshansky hit a long HR to dead centerfield.  It wasn’t all good news, as his other 3 ABs of the night ended with him striking out.  Koshansky had 12 ABs in his brief call up last season, and finished with 1 hit, a double.  2-16 isn’t quite getting it done, but at least when he does get hits they are extra bases. Koshansky really needs to take advantage of the situation with Todd Helton on the DL.  Helton hasn’t been hitting much, but his salary makes him untradable and as long as he’s around, he is going to...

Zimmerman Opening Day Hero in New Ballpark

Monday, March 31 2008 by Tim - , , - 0 comments

Former U.Va. baseball star Ryan Zimmerman made the Washington Nationals' first ballgame in their new park one to remember. The third baseman, already fairly well-known for his heroics, hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the Nationals a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves.
