Wahoos Take Opener, Face Gamecocks Next

On Sunday, the Hoos opened their second ever College World Series, facing off against the Cal Golden Bears. Cavaliers ace Danny Hultzen took the mount, while Cal went with a veteran Erik Johnson over their usual #1 starter. Johnson did not fare all that well, lasting only 3 innings and giving up 5 walks, but managed to keep the Hoos scoreless. Hultzen performed at his usual level, holding the Bears scoreless into the 7th inning, when he gave way to senior Tyler Wilson. Wilson finished the 7th and at this point, the game was still scoreless. It would not remain so. Keith Werman led off with a single...

Hoos Clinch Series with Jackets, Win 12-9

Saturday, April 09 2011 by Tim - 0 comments

I’m not going to write too much about this game, because I spent way too much effort typing play-by-play during the game , but this was a very important win for Virginia to solidify its position at the top of the pile nationally. Taking a road series from a top 10 team (again, I might add) is absurdly impressive. The Cavaliers chased off an MLB draft prospect in GT starting pitcher Jed Bradley by the 5th inning, dropping 5 runs to take a 7-2 lead. A weird aspect of this game was that Virginia had not one, but two ground rule doubles that bounced over the outfield wall. I’ve never seen that happen...

Hultzen Out-duels Pope, Hoos Beat Jackets 6-2

Saturday, April 09 2011 by Tim - 0 comments

One of the more highly anticipated pitching duels occurred last night in the ACC as Virginia’s ace Danny Hultzen took to the mound against Georgia Tech’s Mark Pope. Pope entered the contest 7-0, while Hultzen brought a 6-0 record. Both terrific. But Pope held the ERA edge – bringing in a 0.66 ERA compared to Hultzen’s 1.36. The start of the game was what you’d expect from a pitcher’s duel. The first 14 batters went down in order. Through six innings (36 total outs), there had only been five hits – primarily by Georgia Tech. But then things changed. Down 0-1 heading into the seventh inning, the...

Perfection!

Junior pitcher Will Roberts pitched Virginia’s first ever perfect game tonight as the Cavaliers defeated George Washington 2-0. This is the first perfect game by an ACC team since 1957 and only the 20th perfect game in NCAA Division I baseball history. Amazing! Congratulations Will Roberts!

Cavs Look to Sweep ‘Noles

Almost every Virginia fan will, at some point in their life, refer to a Cavalier team as the Cardiac Cavs. The first two games of the weekend baseball series against Florida State will definitely fall into that category. Virginia was behind in both games (3-1 in the first game, 3-2 and 4-3 in the second game), but ended up winning both by 1 run in the 11th inning. On Friday, Junior Steven Proscia hit a ball that reached the left field wall, easily scoring fellow Junior John Hicks who had reached on a strikingly similar double. In the bottom of the 11th on Saturday, lead-off batter Jared King connected...

Super Regional Preview - Oklahoma

Thursday, June 10 2010 by Tiki - 0 comments

So, the Hoos move on to face the Oklahoma Sooners in a Super Regional to be held at Davenport field in Charlottesville. For anybody who doesn’t know, the Super Regionals are a simple best of 3 series. The first game will be Saturday at 3PM ET. The second game will be Sunday at 4 PM. The third, and final, game will be played Monday at either 1 PM or 7PM, and only if the two teams split the first 2 games. Oklahoma had a solid season , finishing at 47-15. They were particularly good at home, going 22-6. On the road, however, they were just 15-6. They were also 7-3 in neutral sites. I suppose...
