The End of The Al Groh Era

Tuesday, December 30 2008 by Tiki - 0 comments

September 2nd 2000 was opening day of the 2000 Cavaliers football season, the first game I would attend as an alum.  The opponent was BYU, and we lost 38-35 in OT.  The loss hurt, especially considering we led 21-0 at halftime.  I don’t remember much about the game, I was probably drunk.  What I remember most is this was the moment I lost faith in George Welsh as a head football coach.  Looking back, I had begun to lose faith some time before.  There were signs that the game was passing him by.  There were signs that he had lost touch with recruits.  Still...

Landesberg Rookie of the Week for 4th Time

Tuesday, December 30 2008 by Tim - 0 comments

It looks like Sylven Landesberg has done it again . Even though he only scored 9 points in the win over Hampton, he followed that up with an amazing 26 points on the road against Georgia Tech. He added six rebounds and five assists in that game. I’m sure that was a nice opening salvo in his career against the Yellow Jackets, as they were one of the teams in the mix to land the McDonald’s All-American before he announced his intentions to play for the Cavaliers. Landesberg has now won the award four of the seven times it has been presented this season. Singleton (Florida State), Aminu (Wake Forest...

Cavalier Classic: Littles, Cavs Win 68-52

Monday, December 29 2008 by Tim - 0 comments

The Louisiana Tech women’s basketball team set out tonight with one primary goal: stop Monica Wright. At the half, the ACC’s leading scorer – averaging more than 20 points per game – had only 6 points. Job well done? Not quite. Apparently the scouting report on Virginia didn’t quite make clear how much impact another player could have. Lyndra Littles had scored 19 points in the first half. That was just one shy of the total by the entire Lady Techster team. Monica Wright would continue to have foul trouble and would play only 20 minutes tonight. Littles, however, would go on to score a career high...

Baker’s Game Winner Downs Jackets Again

Sunday, December 28 2008 by Tiki - 5 comments

A season ago, Calvin Baker hit a 3 pointer with 4 seconds left to beat the Yellow Jackets at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.  This season, Baker again played the role of Jacket killer, this time driving for a layup with 10 seconds remaining in OT to give the Hoos the lead and the win.  The play came after a Sylven Landesberg turnover at the top of the key led to an open dunk for Georgia Tech’s Gani Lawal that tied the game.  Rather than call a TO and set up the offense, the Hoos inbounded quickly while the Jackets were still celebrating.  Baker dribbled up the left sideline and...

Cavalier Classic: Cavs, Techsters Advance

Sunday, December 28 2008 by Tim - 0 comments

There’s only two things that I know about the Louisiana Tech women’s basketball team. The first is that they have the worst team nickname outside of the Hokies. The second is that the “Lady Techsters” (yes, that’s really their team name) came out to play against UMBC. I’m not sure if I was accurate during my preview in saying that the only heavyweight in the tournament besides the Hoos was UMBC. Louisiana Tech certainly has some history as a program and they’ve been ranked in the top 10 each of the previous four times that the Cavaliers played them. But this season their resume was decidedly mediocre...

Lacrosse Magazine: Men #1, Women #4

Sunday, December 28 2008 by Tim - 1 comments

Lacrosse Magazine released its pre-season rankings for both the men and women last week. The Virginia men’s lacrosse team has the distinction of being the #1 team on their list, while the Virginia women’s team is #4 behind Northwestern, Syracuse and Duke. It’s very interesting to look at this list and see how many of the teams we play during the season that are in the top 25 or even just the top 10. Here’s a rundown: #2 Syracuse #3 Maryland #4 Johns Hopkins #5 North Carolina #6 Cornell #8 Duke In other words, we’re playing four of the top five and six of the top eight… and we’re the #1 team… so...

Marriott Cavalier Classic Preview

Sunday, December 28 2008 by Tim - 1 comments

Virginia hosts the Marriott Cavalier Classic women’s basketball mini-tournament beginning today at 2pm. The schools participating are Louisiana Tech, Rider, UMBC and, of course, Virginia. The Cavaliers hold a 6-2 combined record against the other three schools; they’ve never played UMBC and the two losses were both against Louisiana Tech. Louisiana Tech takes on UMBC today at 2pm, followed by the Hoos taking on Rider at 4:30pm. The losers of the above games will compete in the consolation game tomorrow at 4:30pm. The winners will take the floor at 7pm tomorrow. The game against Rider today should...

How About A Nice Football?

Tuesday, December 23 2008 by Ben - 1 comments

At the Dear Ol' Christmas Party, things can get a little raucous. Tiki, remember when I was hanging from the chandelier after too much Egg Nog? Me either. You don't even want to hear about to hear about Tim in his underwear; it wasn't pretty. However, sometimes they turn into a good post. So, this year, I'm handing out some Christmas gifts to some of the players on the basketball team. It's a lame idea, I know, but I'm a sentimental hack. Part two will cover other sports Calvin Baker - Blowbyability I'm handing Baker a quality made-up by either Jay Bilas or Bill Raftery. It describes a guy who...

Ticket Office: We Won’t Gouge You

Tuesday, December 23 2008 by Tim - 0 comments

OK, so maybe they didn’t put it quite that way. But still. The headline is “ Virginia Athletics Ticket Prices to Remain Same Next Year .” I think my title is better. Basically, ticket prices and concession prices are not increasing for the 2009-2010 athletics season. Interestingly, it notes that we currently only charge admission for nine of the 25 sports we compete in. Given how much i spend annually on athletics tickets, perhaps I need to start attending some of the other ones that don’t charge. Here’s the whole release: CHARLOTTESVILLE— The Virginia athletics department announced on Tuesday...
